I am so proud to note that Chiang Rai province started a pioneer project to create a local map of the houses introducing renowned artists and announced that Chiang Rai was named "The city of artists". Cooperating with other Chiang Rai provincial organizations, the Chiang Rai Cultural Office also took part in this project officially by opening the houses of 100 artists who are ready to welcome and accommodate visitors. Thirteen artists are living in Chiang Rai and trying to help the community by using their works to generate income for their communities in various ways. In this area, there are many famous Thai artists who we knew quite well. The first person I want to mention is Thawan Duchanee. He called his house "Baan Dum" (Dark house) and it is situated at the 14th Kilometer from Chiang Rai. This home is also used as an art gallery and meeting place for visitors and Thawan who created many exceptional and outstanding works. Thawan said that many of his works harbor a symbolic interpretation of hell and evil. On the contrary, Chalermchai Kositpipat, another well-known artist who has different art concept from Thawan, exhibited his beautiful sculptures of heaven at Wat Rong Khun temple which is located at the 13th kilometer from Chiang Rai. Chalermchai used a large amount of money from selling his meaningful paintings and his strong faith in order to support Buddhism by building this marvelous temple.
Actually, I want to talk about a female artist whom I visited on 18th of August 2012. Her name is Nitaya Tamwong. In my personal view, her art works are simply beautiful and most of them are paintings of flowers. She is one of the 13 artists who has already opened her house to the public.

Her house is called "Suan Silpa Lark Si" (Colorful Art Garden). She told me that a simple way of life is the key concept of this house and all of her works. After Nitaya graduated from University of Technology Lanna Chiang Mai, she had constant art exhibitions in Chiang Rai where she was born. More importantly, Baan Thung Marn, where she currently lives, is a part of famous historical community called "Wiang Ka Long" which is full of ancient kilns and potteries. The total area starts from Vieng Pa Pao district in Chiang Rai province to Wang Nua district in Lam Pang province and there are about 1,000 kilns. From this, it is assumed that clay in this area is exceptionally suitable for making earthenware. When the potteries are burnt properly, they are quite thin and have beautiful colors.
Nitaya Tamwongis a person who assists visiting explorers, artists and conservation travelers. She also provides information and writes papers with educational institutes to know and understand local archeology and how to draw flowers and leaves in the house. At the back of the house are rice fields of the family and Wat Prathat Mon Prachao Lai on the mountain. In the evening the lights from the temple are very charming.
Nitaya is an artist who stays at her home but she has had many art exhibitions since the year 2000. Her "Colorful Art Garden" is the art gallery which happily welcomed many visitors and art collectors. As I mentioned, she is one of 13 artists whom many organizations in Chiang Rai asked to exhibit her works at least once a year. Every September, Colorful Art Garden will become the place that people can see and appreciate her latest work. In addition, she wants to provide accommodations for kids and teenagers as well as cultural explorers and travelers.
Moreover, it is not so difficult for many people to visit the nearby hot springs and observe the remnants of Wiang Ka Long kilns. It can be said that provincial organizations and cultural centers truly support a woman who loves art and community. She combines simplicity and a truth of life from the real world and depicts this in her colorful paintings of flowers. The varieties of colors for flowers are important components which provide timeless beauty. From 5th – 20th October 2012, Nitaya opened a new exhibition at 9 Art Gallery and Architect studio in Chiang Rai.

Dr. Thawan Duchanee (September 27, 1939 – September 3, 2014) was a Thai contemporary painter, architect and sculptor with an international reputation. In 2001, this notable artist was given the prize by the Office of the National Culture Commission of Thailand as the National Thai Artist in Fine art and Visual art.
Thawan was raised in Chiang Rai, Thailand and started art studies at the age of fifteen at the Art and Craft College under the scholarship of the Ministry of Education of Thailand. In 1958, he furthered his studies at Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Art department, Silpakorn University.

Thawan Duchanee was one of the few Silpakorn students who went on to complete a bachelor’s
degree. Most graduated with a diploma. After graduation and with the support of Professor Silpa Bhilasri
who was the faculty dean at the time, Thawan was awarded a fellowship from the Ministry of Education,
Culture and Science of the Netherlands to study at Royal Academy of Visual Arts, Amsterdam, for five
years where he earned his master’s and doctoral degrees.
Thawan Duchanee devoted all his life to the study of and research in aesthetics, Buddhism, and
a combination of oriental and western philosophies on which his works were based. His creative genius
was seen in many forms, including painting, sculpture, architecture, decorative art, music, literature and
poetry. Thus, he is a role model for younger artists to emulate. He is one of the contemporary artists who
introduced “contemporary oriental art” to the international community.

Buddhist references have played an important role in Thawan’s works. According to one of notable works, a series of Ramayana paintings he presented all of the characters in his own interpretation. Thawan earned a worldwide reputation as a Thai contemporary artist from these buddhist painting.
“Art is beyond nature and intellect” Thawan said. He gave priority to human artistic creativity in artworks.
Dr. Thawan was the first engraver using a new technique. He used special ballpoint pen to create engravings containing millions of strokes. After working in this way for a while,a doctor suggested him to stop because the way he worked had a disastrous effect on his health.
Thawan also created the painting by Zen brush in order to present a Zen philosophy in artistic form.
The unique characteristic of Thawan’s painting including not only form and religious story but also the colour he used. After learning about Chinese, Indian and Japanese artworks which characteristic is monochrome painting, He was inspired to paint in black and white in order to precisely express the inner feeling.
Thawan is not only famous for his paintings but also architecture. His architectural masterpiece is Black House. It was the residence for Thawan for the rest of his life

ดิฉันรู้สึกภาคภูมิใจที่ได้รับการบันทึกไว้ว่าจังหวัดเชียงรายได้เริ่มต้นโครงการนำร่องที่จะสร้างแผนที่ท้องถิ่นของบ้านแนะนำศิลปินที่มีชื่อเสียงและประกาศว่าเชียงรายคือ "เมืองแห่งศิลปิน" เพราะต้องทำงานร่วมกับองค์การต่างๆของเชียงรายสำนักงานวัฒนธรรมจังหวัดเชียงรายจึงเข้าร่วมกับโครงการนี้อย่างเป็น
ทางการโดยการเปิดบ้านศิลปินที่มีอยู่มากกว่าร้อยชีวิต ที่พร้อมต้อนรับและ จัดหาที่อยู่อาศัยให้กับผู้มาเยือน ศิลปิน 13 คนที่พักอาศัยในจังหวัดเชียงรายพยายามที่จะช่วยเหลือชุมชนโดยใช้งานศิลปะเพื่อสร้างรายได้ให้กับชุมชนในหลายๆวิธีการ ในพื้นที่แห่งนี้ มีศิลปินไทยหลายท่านที่พวกเรารู้จักกันค่อนข้างดี ศิลปินคนแรกที่ดิฉันอยากจะกล่าวถึงคือคุณถวัลย์ ดัชนี เขาเรียกบ้านของตัวเองว่า "บ้านดำ" ตั้งอยู่ที่กิโลเมตรที่ 14 จากจังหวัดเชียงราย บ้านหลังนี้ใช้เป็นห้องแสดงงานศิลปะและสถานที่พบปะพูดคุยระหว่างผู้มาเยี่ยมชมและคุณถวัลย์ที่สร้างผลงานที่โดดเด่นและยอดเยี่ยม คุณถวัลย์กล่าวไว้ว่าผลงานของเขาหลายอย่างเป็นการตีความสัญลักษณ์ของนรกภูมิและความชั่วร้าย แต่ในทางตรงกันข้าม คุณเฉลิมชัย โฆษิตพิพัฒน์ ศิลปินที่มีชื่อเสียงอีกท่านหนึ่งมีแนวคิดทางศิลปะที่ต่างไปจากคุณถวัลย์ และผลงานประติมากรรมแสดงภาพของสวรรค์เอาไว้ที่วัดร่องขุ่นซึ่งตั้งอยู่ที่กิโลเมตรที่ 13 จากจังหวัดเชียงราย
คุณเฉลิมชัยใช้เงินจำนวนมากจากจากการจำหน่ายภาพเขียนที่มีความหมายและความศรัทธาอย่าแรงกล้าเพื่อที่จะสนับสนุนพระพุทธศาสนาโดยการก่อสร้างวัดที่สวยงามเช่นนี้
ที่จริงแล้วดิฉันอยากจะพูดถึงศิลปินหญิงที่ดิฉันได้ไปเยี่ยมเมื่อวันที่18สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2555 คุณนิตยา ตามวงค์ ในความคิดเห็นส่วนตัวของดิฉัน งานศิลปะของคุณนิตยามีความสวยงามอย่างเรียบง่าย และงานทั้งหมดเป็นภาพเขียนรูปดอกไม้ คุณนิตยาเป็นหนึ่งในศิลปิน 13 คนที่เปิดบ้านให้คนทั่วไปเข้าชม บ้านมีชื่อว่าสวนศิลป์หลากสี เธอบอกดิฉันว่าวิถีชีวิตที่เรียบง่ายเป็นแนวคิดสำคัญของบ้านหลังนี้และผลงานทั้งหมด หลังจากคุณนิตยาจบจากมหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีล้านนาจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เธอมีงานแสดงศิลปะอย่างสม่ำเสมอที่จังหวัดเชียงรายซึ่งเป็นบ้านเกิด ที่สำคัยก็คือบ้านทุ่งม่านที่เธอพักอาศัยอยู่ในขณะนี้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของเมืองประวัติศาสตร์ที่เรียกว่า "เวียงกาหลง"ที่เต็มไปด้วยเตาเผาโบราณและเครื่องถ้วยชามเก่าแก่ พื้นที่ทั้งหมดเริ่มต้นจากอำเภอเวียงป่าเป้าในจังหวัดเชียงรายไปถึงอำเภอวังเหนือจังหวัดลำปางและมีเตาเผาเรื่องถ้วยชามอยู่ 1,000 แห่ง จากนี้มีการสันนิษฐานว่าดินเหนียวในบริเวณนี้มีความเหมาะสมเป็นพิเศษกับการผลิตเครื่องปั้นดินเผา เมื่อเครื่องถ้วยชามได้รับการเผาอย่างเหมาะสมก็จะมีขนาดค่อนข้างบางและมีสีสันสวยงาม
คุณนิตยา ตามวงค์เป็นผู้ที่คอยช่วยเหลือนักสำรวจที่เข้ามาเยี่ยมชม ศิลปินและนักเดินทางเชิงอนุรักษ์ ยังเป็นคนให้ข้อมูลและเขียนรายงานกับสถาบันการศึกษาต่างๆเพื่อทำให้ทราบและทำความเข้าใจถึงโบราณคดีโบราณและวาดภาพดอกไม้ใบไม้ในบ้านด้านหลังบ้านเป็นที่ปลุกข้าวของครอบครัวและวัด

คุณนิตยาเป็นศิลปินที่อยู่กับบ้าน แต่ก็มีงานแสดงศิลปะหลายครั้งตั้งแต่ปีพ.ศ. 2543 สวนศิลป์หลากสีเป็นห้องแสดงภาพซึ่งยินดีต้อนรับผู้มาเยือนและผู้สะสมงานศิลปะ ตามที่ดิฉันได้กล่าวมาแล้ว คุณนิตยาเป็นหนึ่งในศิลปิน 13 คนที่หลายๆองค์กรในจังหวัดเชียงรายขอให้แสดงผลงานอย่างน้อยปีละครั้ง ทุก
เดือนกันยายน สวนศิลป์หลากสีจะกลายเป็นสถานที่ที่ทุกคนได้มองเห็นและรู้สึกซาบซึ้งกับผลงานใหม่ล่าสุด นอกเหนือจากนี้เธออยากจะจัดที่พักให้กับเด็กและวัยรุ่นตลอดจนนักสำรวจทางวัฒนธรรมและนักเดินทาง
นอกเหนือจากนี้คงไม่ยากเท่าไหร่นักสำหรับใครหลายคนที่อยากไปเที่ยวน้ำพร้อนบริเวณใกล้เคียงและสำรวจส่วนที่เหลืออยู่ของเตาเผาเวียงกาหลงสามารถกล่าวได้ว่าองค์กรต่างๆของจังหวัดและศูนย์วัฒนธรรมให้การสนับสนุนอย่างจริงจังสำหรับผู้หญิงที่รักงานศิลปะและชุมชน คุณนิตยาได้รวบรวมความเรียบง่ายและความจริงของชีวิตของโลกจริงและถ่ายทอดลงไปในภาพเขียนรูปดอกไม้ที่มีสีสันสดใส ความหลากหลายของสีในดอกไม้นั้นเป็นส่วนสำคัญที่ทำให้เกิดความงามไร้กาลเวลา ตั้งแต่วันที่ 5 – 20 ตุลาคม พ.ศ.2555 คุณนิตยาได้เปิดนิทรรศการครั้งใหม่ที่ 9 Art Gallery และที่ Architect Studioเชียงราย
